Parallel finish

         

    This project was really different from others. We had to find an event and make a project for it without using specific items from the event. The project is one big metaphor. We were also told to try to make a connection with this project, which is what I did. I am going on a mission trip to Haiti over the summer and so I thought I'd use an event from there- the big earthquake. So I had gotten a box from work (again) and destroyed it (thanks to my older brother for helping with the destruction). The destruction of the box represents the destruction and devastation from the earthquake, and the rose represents the lives, hope, and love that are still found in Haiti. The colorful background is also kind of like the types of items (like blankets) that you can find there. (And thanks to Mr. Sands for helping with the photos) 

Did your work take an unexpected turn due to a mistake or did something happen that was unplanned?

My brother and I destroyed the box a little too much, so the side came apart and the bottom came off. I was going to glue it back together in class, but I ended up just laying the box on the bottom and laying the top on the box. It created a more artist ruined look upon the box. I liked it a lot better than what it would have looked if I had glued the box back together.

Did you try something that you weren’t sure about as part of this project?

Well I usually don't use items like boxes or flowers; I usually draw patterns and things like that on a sheet of paper. This time I wanted to go outside of my comfort zone a little. I knew I had a box I wanted to use, but I wasn't sure about anything else I wanted to do. I ended up destroying the box and using a rose to help show the meaning of the project. It's a lot different than what I usually do, and I wasn't really sure about any of it.

Time

So you may have been terrible at doing things (maybe you still are, that's okay too)

Like, riding your bike...

or eating...

or maybe even singing...

But because you were not so great at it, you decided to practice...

And you became better at the things you do...

Like maybe now you can do tricks over people on a bike 

Or maybe you have mastered the arts of eating (notice how there appears to be absolutely nothing on her face)

Or maybe you're currently the best shower singer in the world and you host daily shower performances..in your shower.

People get better at things over time.
Which is what I'm going to make a video showing how people get better at things over time.
Everything you do is from practice!
But I don't have a video yet, but I had to make a post explaining my idea.

Appropriation

Did you use a source for inspiration, then combine it with your own ideas to make it original?
My idea came to me at work. I knew I needed to start this art project, but I still had no idea what I wanted to do. I came down to the final decision to do something with cardboard boxes because I was unpacking things and there were a lot of cardboard boxes laying around. So I stood there for a while and stared at the pile of boxes, hoping for an idea. I was all like, "cardboard box...card..board..box..hmmm...
cardboard box....boardcard box? huh...how would that work... board..card..box...BORED card box... ohh I'm getting somewhere...A BOX OF BORED CARDS!" My mother actually came up with the name "Bored Card box." So it's a "bored card box" instead of a "cardboard box."

Did you ask another student for feedback during your work process?
Of course! I love asking other students (especially creative students) about my artwork because sometimes I like their ideas better than mine or sometimes the combinations of ideas are even better than just one idea. WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH MY PROJECT! I had originally thought of just doing a lot of bored cards and putting them on a box, but then they didn't look very bored. So then the other members at my  art table were like, you should make a face out of the cards. And I was like .. yes.
And so it happened.

Did your work take an unexpected turn due to a mistake or did something happen that was unplanned?
Well, when I make the patterns and whatnot, I usually just use a thin-tipped black marker and go for it. By doing that, when I make mistakes, I have to fix them somehow. The top right Ace card was from a mistake (that's why a large section is colored in black). Also, if you look at the card right above the hand, there is a swirl that is going outside of the border like thing on the card. That was also a mistake. And most of my designs are unplanned; I just draw them. If I make a mistake, I just make it into something else. That's why I like designs, because you can't really mess them up.
